So yesterday at the magic shop I was fooled by a magic trick by a 12 year old. Now before you judge, this trick was incredible! It could be followed all the way up till the last point when instead of the usual ‘be supportive and say great job’, all of us in the shop used the rarely said phrase of ‘Vernon…you have returned!’. This trick was incredible, and for someone that age (who only seems to read Vernon, Marlo and ECT) this is amazing. A future star in the world of card magic and at the age of 12, already one of my inspirations. Absolutely incredible, i must adopt him soon!
This will be a boring blog post but I felt compelled to tell you all of my wonderful* life at the moment. I guess I will separate it down to magic specifically cause truth be known I haven’t done much else due to exams. Well on the collecting side of things I finally completed my collection of ‘Penumbra’ and by god I will miss the challenge. Next up: Cosmo. I have also just invested in 165 decks of old bikes because truth be known the new ones suck and I needed to buy something to cheer myself up. Poor method of doing so but it did none-the-less, however I am now out of pocket for the next few years.
I have been devouring up all Walton references I can find and have discovered his addiction to the elusive ‘Turnover pass’, something tells me he was starved of it in his early years and when he found it he just had to put it in every trick he ever developed. I am not ‘ripping’ Mr. Walton however because his effects are incredible and I just sound pissed off and miserable cause I am sick of exams. I digress. With 4 full note books of ideas since the start of the year I finally got down to culling through the rubbish spending many a ‘all nighters’ refining and changing many of the ideas.
After being asked to release a small bunch of effects I have also found 4 of my favourite creations from over the years and put them into a small 20 page booklet. 20 copies too. Thank god for Lulu. Although I feel I should not be releasing anything because I prefer the ‘underground’ I suppose 20 copies should soon vanish into the bottom of people’s underwear draws thank god! The effects contained: 2 of my variations on classic effects, 1 Sleight and 1 gambling based routine. A few witty stories and Bobs your uncle I now have my very own mini booklet. A milestone day.
Regardless I cannot think of much else and I currently feel very spaced so I bid you adieu and fair well.
So for those of you who are unlucky enough to know me you will know I have been hidden away for numerous personal and some sort reasons over the past few months. However, I felt I would emerge from my hermit hole to discuss ‘The House of Playing Cards’, a project and company emerging from the blue crown. I had heard about this a while back and in fact knew most of the details before its release due to the 816 podcast, numerous websites and cause I’m a psychic.
I finally got a look in at the site and I must say it is very nice. I’m not one who is too fussed about web design so I will instead just discuss the numerous aspects of the site in no chronological order. The NOC deck I had seen photos of and after years of hearing the ‘idea’ of a single colour backed deck it is nice to see that someone finally pulled their finger out and did it! With the wave of ‘minimalist’ design sweeping along the card world this was the perfect time to release something this and not only that but they just generally look SWAG! The other decks on offer (Vaudeville, Crown, Americana) are also really sweet decks, as someone who enjoys cards and numerous designs (two fingers up to those who have ‘magician PMS’ regarding custom decks) reading the full details about what is to come made me all red and made me giggle like a little girl*.
The prize tiers and points system is also such a sweet idea. With company’s gradually moving to the ‘points with purchases’ system this is providing some pretty sweet incentives to buy decks (instead of food) and looking at some of the prizes they are giving out I think I simultaneously pooped my pants whilst exclaiming ‘DAFUQ!’. Christmas has indeed come early.
The numerous resources and books is always a great edition and a mixture of card magic, gambling, card games and flourishing hasn’t pushed anyone away from the market (unlike a specific companies episode of a certain show [cough] rewind [cough]). I digress, the most awaited part of the site was the ‘submit a deck’ section, I won’t explain what this allows you to do cause you can all go on the site but this to me just took the biscuit. Not only do I think this is such an amazing idea but it really will just push the card market in a whole new direction (but without sounding like a kill joy, moaning gimp), this is assuming that it is regulated, take that as you will.
There are many branches I could take off this but that is for another blog post. However for now I think this project is absolutely incredible and I am looking forward to what comes of it in future.
Brilliant job to the whole team and peace!
This is a topic I know that many people have thought about which is the idea of magic and cardistry forums. I am not particularly active on forums despite being a member of almost all of them but the ones I do post on occasionally are TSD, D&D and The Blue Crown. Although I love theory 11 as a company and all that they do, I found that the people on the forums were…well how can I put it? There was an over population of pricks! A few, who shall go unnamed, who seem to troll their way through a majority of posts posted and enjoy the feeling of superiority when someone is first introduced to the search thread button. Regardless, this is merely why I don’t post there, besides the plethora of ‘valuable’ put downs that can be found there, I feel that much of the solid advice and information from a decent group of people on there is highly valuable.
To me I have found, though, that each forum represents a different skill level and that over time you commence your journey through the ranks of online notoriety:
1: Beginner level (Or ‘What are Jerrys Nuggets?’ level) I found are mainly on theory 11 along with those who enjoy pestering the youngsters and consider themselves ‘underground’ because no one even knows who they are.
2. Intermediate level (Or ‘I believe I may have discovered some amazing sleights’ level) which I find is The Blue Crown.
3. Just above intermediate level (Or ‘Nope, it’s Marlo’s’ level) which I find is D&D.
Course in such an art as this no one can ever really reach perfection but advanced levels would include The Magic Pebble, TSD and those who aren’t even on forums. And I’m sure a lot of people on the magic cafe want to be in this level too.
I digress, please do not take this as a rant but merely a few thoughts by yours truly concerning the popular topic of forums. I guess the reason I don’t post is that the places I hang round I am surrounded by those far better than myself, which is what I enjoy, so me posting anything concerning any topic is pretty arbitrary seeing as I most likely having nothing more to add. But if I feel I have a contribution a little better than bad then I shall post it in the hope that it at least provides some form of humour.
With my ever growing urge to enter the big wide world that is the Internet, I felt that a written blog is necessary and where better to commence such a task other than tumblr! Although I have had this blog for a while I never actually posted anything other than my photos from instagram.
So without further ado I present to you…me. Hi, I’m Josh, and I am an alcoholic. Well not really but my attempts at being funny instead make me guilty of being a retard. I digress. Although I run a ‘vlog’, I felt a ‘blog’ would be more suited for posts that I can do where ever and whenever since vlogs take quite a while by comparison. Oh and for those of you who haven’t seen it (www.youtube.com/JSCardist)…shameful plug.
So this was just a quick post to say I will start posting, what about I do not know but give a few posts before you decide to unfollo….
